Their use of dynamics, the ability to be so heart-stopping beautiful yet outwardly aggressive, is the reason why so many people hold this band in such esteem. Now, vocalist Chino Moreno, guitarist Stephen Carpenter, drummer Abe Cunningham, programmer Frank Delgado, and bassist Sergio Vega welcome Ohms,  10 tracks of heavy and reflective material that mirror the emotional distress of the pandemic and lockdown, the political power struggle that the world is witnessing, and the internal conflicts many are facing. “This Link is Dead” helps to keep the listener’s interest in the album alive in the second half with a tight rocker that features the studio “trick” of vocals sounding like they were recorded through a filter (a bit overused, but when it works, it works).

mailen. Ohms is an album for every type of Deftones fan. It’s such a delight to hear the band rage with such uncompromising intensity again, so good in fact that it’s the highlight of the record. Ohms shows that even with the ever-changing landscape, the band stands out and conquer with their creative prowess.

The Sacramento alt-metallers have rarely let their lofty standards slip below essential, but, even though many were hugely onboard with the more ethereal, experimental post-rock vibes of 2016’s Gore, there were some murmurings of discontent from fans that the album sacrificed too much in the way of heaviness. Saying that, the second half of the record is definitely where the old-school fans of traditional heaviness will have the most joy.

In times of uncertainty,  Deftones have risen to the occasion and offered listeners an outlet to channel their frustrations.

It’s hard to contemplate that the Deftones have now actually been around – just on record – for twenty-five years, with their debut album Adrenaline having first gotten rock fans pumped back in 1995 (this technically makes the Deftones eligible for the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame). “Error” is anything but, not just instantly commanding the attention of the listener with another grunge-like attack but is framed with a simple but captivating hardcover riff throughout the song.

Ohms, the Deftones’ latest album in four years (and ninth studio album overall) opens with “Genesis”, a track that immediately alters the listener to what they’re about to embark on.

Of all the bands to emerge from the mid-90s nu metal scene, Deftones were the most adventurous. 2020 is also a hallmark year in the Sacramento-born band’s career, as they celebrate 25 years since dropping their searing debut, 20 years since releasing their incomparable album, 10 years since unveiling their emotive and piercing record, and one presidential term since gracing fans with their eighth studio album.

The album takes a breath on “Pompeji,” with a more balladic temperament and swaying tempo, while “This Link is Dead”  and “Radiant City” dive back into unstoppable ferocity and gripping guitars.
