It has been said that sharing my silver medal with that incident on the victory dais detracted from my performance. The matter was taken so seriously that Carlos and Smith were removed from the Olympic Village, and indeed Mexico, with immediate effect. It took until 2012 for the Australian House of Representatives to make a posthumous apology to Norman, stating the government ‘belatedly recognises the powerful role that Peter Norman played in furthering racial equality’, while apologising for excluding him from subsequent Olympics, and acknowledging ‘the bravery of Peter Norman in donning an Olympic Project for Human Rights badge on the podium, in solidarity with African-American athletes Tommie Smith and John Carlos’.

Carlos unzipped his tracksuit top in solidarity with US blue-collar workers, and wore a beaded necklace to represent ‘those individuals that were lynched, or killed and that no-one said a prayer for, that were hung and tarred’.

In later life, he would go on to suffer problems with depression and alcohol addiction. Draw lines from these associations to the circled word to create a web. But when he was invited to condemn the actions of Smith and Carlos at the 1968 games, which would have made life for himself and his family much easier, he refused. Students might share that they see three men.

What are your thoughts and feelings about what happened that fateful day in 1968? When Tommie Smith and John Carlos gave the salute at '68 Olympics, Peter Norman wore a pin in solidarity with them. As well as the black gloves – known to be a symbol of the Black Panther movement – the two men received their medals without shoes on to represent black poverty, while Smith, who had set a new world record at 19.83 seconds, wore a black scarf to signify black pride.
Professor Edwards and his organisation, the Olympic Project for Human Rights felt so strongly opposed to the conditions that Black citizens were subjected to, that he called for Black Athletes to boycott the 1968 games.

Step 4: Interpretations However, just above their northern boarder in the United States of America, civil unrest had gripped the nation for more than a decade, which threatened to derail an Olympic schedule which they had been expected to perform. Why? I have to confess, I was rather proud to be part of it. Peter Norman passed in 2006, John Carlos and Tommie Smith carried the casket of their friend and ally the day of his funeral.   He was happy to support these two men in their fight for equality. Peter Norman was an Australian athlete in the 200m discipline and was, until his untimely death in 2006, an avid anti-apartheid and anti-discrimination supporter. Ask them to compare and contrast the two men on the right of the photo with the man on the left. The image is of three men who won gold, silver and bronze medals in the 200 meters. Thank you! They wore the Olympic Project for Human Rights badge, a movement of athletes supporting equality for all. IOC President Avery Brundage even threatened to boot out the entire US team.

Yet the truth is far more powerful than the narrative we have been lead to believe. Two have their fists raised above their heads.

Invite students to free associate with the word ally. As members of the Black Community, we remember Smith and Carlos for their inspiring individual performances as Athletes, and for their contribution to the Civil Rights Movement as Activists. A closer analysis of the image shows that Carlos, the runner who placed third, has his glove on the left hand.

Norman was from a country with strict apartheid laws, which he was vehemently against. All three men are wearing similar black outfits and have ribbons with metal objects around their necks. The crowds booed and cursed the salute, and, the very next day, the International Olympic Comittee (IOC) decided to strip the champions of their medals. They all have a round white badge on the left hand side of their jackets. Before the games, word had spread in the Olympic village that Smith and Carlos were planning a protest if they won medals. Their courage was memorialized in this statue erected at San Jose State University. I have to confess, I was rather proud to be part of it. Yet despite his public support for Racial equality, his position in iconic image in 1968, was never questioned, simply assumed to be another White man in an image of Black freedom. And the land is dark

Most adults…, Our people are our main asset.

He was subsequently barred from competition back in Australia and was ostracized by the Olympic community for most of his life. It was Norman who suggested Smith and Carlos wear one glove each after they realised they only had a single pair between them. Ask students to look at the picture above and describe what they see. And yet the third man in this picture, often forgotten -- and left out entirely in the San Jose memorial -- was more than a footnote in the story of this brave protest. Showing solidarity with their cause, Norman asked Smith and Carlos if they had another OPHR badge going spare that he could wear alongside them. The race was memorable, but the awards ceremony that followed even more so. It meant that for many Black Americans, such as Professor Edwards, the chance for Black Americans to perform at the Olympics for the USA was just that; a performance, as if the athletes were ‘performing animals in the games.’. How are they different? We aim to empower women — particularly those underserved by and underrepresented in American media — with the information, community and tools they need to be equal participants in …

In this way the word ALLY continues around the circle, eliciting associations from all students.
