Haplo is suspicious of him in turn, but has not guessed what he is. Sinistrad gives them a feast and tries to get Haplo to tell him more about what he is. Set in a world that is bizarre and novel in construction, but self consistent, different races live segregated lives. The first book is amazingly spry in that they don't bog it down with endless details and make it carry the entire world-building burden. As political factions from each realm crash into each other as a consequence of their individual searches for power and better lives, the world’s long-held status quos are unheaved. The maps and diagrams in the front of the book certainly helped. Fans of swords and sorcery in any form will find something to love in this wide-ranging series.

Hugh thinks that Bane is being killed against the will of Queen Anne, but it is revealed after his departure that Anne and Stephen are allied in wanting Bane dead. And I must say that, once again, I was transported to a land of magic and adventure that I would love to explore in a years-long role-playing campaign. This was the first epic fantasy book I ever read. Following the Rose of the Prophet trilogy, Weis and Hickman embarked on an ambitious seven-volume series that began with Dragon Wing. Sinistrad also talks a lot to Bane, getting Bane to tell him all about the Kicksey-Winsey, because Bane has worked out what it does. Yeah it sure seems that way, till you get further in... and you start realizing some of the plot, and the timeline... just WHEN it happens will interest you!
So long that I’d forgotten most of what happened on the first book and only remember some of the books that follow. Weis and Hickman tread heavily on the well trodden ground of fantastic racism. Haplo drives it off for long enough to escape in the elven ship with the elf lieutenant (now captain), and Bane, and the dog. This is probably one of the first fantasy series I ever picked up and I love it for that.

hands down, my all-time favorite series. I am given this first volume a reluctant three stars, but I don't recommend the series.
