Only Harriet Thorpe briefly adds some oomph and presence as Annie's sharp-tongued mum. If you are going to turn an iconic film and sparkling script into a musical you better have a very good reason. Sam soon begins to receive letters from enthusiastic women all over the country, each one hoping they'll land the man dubbed 'Sleepless in Seattle'. It blurs into a jazz-light background and some of the clumsy lyrics clank painfully. The simple but inventive set is a single large perspex cube, one half is Sam's Seattle waterfront home, the other is Annie's Baltimore life. Here's hoping this production signals the start of better times ahead for the theatre industry as a whole. The Troubadour Wembley Park Theatre was certainly abuzz for the opening night of Sleepless: A Musical Romance - the first fully staged musical to take place in the UK since the beginning of lockdown.

As is true of the film, you feel for the decent if dull Walter (Daniel Casey), Annie’s partner, who is blindsided by her gathering infatuation with a voice she needs to see made flesh. Mathurin's engaging presence and warm demeanour are just the ticket for a musical of this style. Jesus Christ Superstar may already have made a triumphant return to Regent’s Park Open Air Theatre, but this vivacious reworking of the Tom Hanks- Meg Ryan romcom brings song and dance back to an indoor venue. Michael Burdette’s book takes its lead from the Oscar-nominated screenplay co-written by Nora Ephron, at times running certain references into the ground. Express. Safety precautions are in place.

It also niftily transforms into the aforementioned New York landmark. In fact, all the best numbers go to the minor characters: there's a zesty song for three women who write to Sam after hearing him on the radio, and a clever duet for Jonah (impressively played at the performance I saw by Jobe Hart) and Sam's mate Rob (Cory English) in which they decide to take action. The plot is paper-thin, but full of an understated longing for the world to be better and to have a purpose. Kimberley Walsh as Annie and Jay McGuiness as Sam.

Sam's story piques the interest of hopeless romantic Annie (Kimberley Walsh), a newspaper reporter 3,000 miles away in Baltimore. But they bring to the stage version a cheerful, hard-grafting energy honed from their years in pop bands, as Strictly contestants, and in previous theatrical knock-offs of cinematic gems, such as Big and Elf. What Annie responds to in Sam is his ability to talk about love and to acknowledge feelings – "I can't believe I'm so affected/A guy opened up/It's so unexpected"; her beau, on the other hand, has given her stock in the company for a Christmas present. Walsh sings cleanly and clearly and is thoroughly engaged with the role. The 1993 romantic comedy starring Tom Hanks and Meg Ryan is transformed into a musical at the Pasadena Playhouse. But it’s unclear why Annie really needs to sing of her love for Grant — just as it’s hard to believe that so avid a film buff would debate the pronunciation of Kerr’s last name.
