On May 22, 1956, Bob Conroy donated Stubby to the Smithsonian Institution, and he was put on display in the National Museum (now the Arts and Industries Building, next to the Smithsonian Castle).

One of Stubby’s greatest recorded achievements occurred late one night on the western front.

Stubby touched the hearts of many, the hero dog who followed his buddies to war, and when he died in 1926 his obituary ran in several newspapers.

When the exhibit was installed in 2004, we made sure Stubby was front and center, where he is today. But on the whole, most of the elements relating to Stubby are true. Sgt. If she wasn’t in the museum business, she’d be a veterinarian.

When he died, the New York Times ran an obituary longer than that of most celebrities of the day; and Stubby is honored by a display at the Smithsonian Institute. But how much do you know about the decorated war dog? Nobody knows exactly when the dog later known as Sergeant Stubby was born, but it is thought to have been during the first half of the First World War.

It was a real challenge, but we tried to be as sensitive as possible. “Cry havoc,” goes the line from Shakespeare’s “Julius Caesar,” “and let slip the dogs of war.”. The soldier wore an Iron Cross when captured. Alerted by the commotion, Stubby’s fellow soldiers were then able to capture and imprison the spy. Upon discovery by Conroy’s Commanding Officer, the story goes, Stubby saluted him, and the CO was so impressed he allowed Stubby to remain with the troops.
